STEN HOSTFALT's NYC GUITAR STUDIO
Sten Hostfalt's educational base for operations
is his own NYC Guitar Studio, operating on a
daily basis at locations in Manhattan's Midtown
and Lower East Side as well as in Ridgewood
catering to schools and educational
projects in New York City and elsewhere.
Built on nearly three decades of musical activity
both as a performer, composer and educator on
the U.S. East Coast, and in New York City since
1994-registered as a New York business in 2006
as the educational divison of Sonus Rex, NYC
currently celebrates a decade
a New York creative music educational activity.
A multi-genre facility, NYC Guitar Studio is also
notably known as one of few places anywhere,
to offer systematic studies of microtonal music
based on the equal tempered 72-note virtual
pitch continuum, formulated by Joe Maneri.
ACADEMIC EDUCATOR PROFILE
A former (2001-05) teaching faculty member
of one of the world's oldest conservatories,
The Royal College Of Music in Stockholm,
Kungliga Musikhogskolan KMH Sten Hostfalt
holds a Master of Music Degree in Composition
and a Graduate Diploma in Jazz Performance,
with honors from New England Conservatory
of Music, where he studied Jazz Improvisation
privately with Jimmy Giuffre and Paul Bley,
guitar with Mick Goodrick, Theory and ensemble
with George Russell,
composition with Malcolm
Peyton, James Hoffmann, orchestration with
Lee Hyla and microtonal music with Joe Maneri.
As NEC big band member, in an edition that
among others included trumpet player
Vu, he appeared in concert with legendary
Jazz composer/arranger/pianist Clare Fischer.
And as a New England Conservatory emissary
due to academic excellence, a member of the
1992-93 NEC Honors Jazz Ensemble coached
by Ran Blake, he participated in numerous
representative clinics, workshops, concert
concert performances and academic projects.
He received his Bachelor Of Music Degree
( Cum Laude, Outstanding Musicianship
Award ) from Berklee College Of Music
where he apprenticed in Phil Wilson's
'Rainbow Band', before succeeding guitarist
Wolfgang Muthspiel to appear alongside
classmates Chris Cheek, Seamus Blake,
Melvin Butler and Scott Kinsey-as the
guitarist in one of the last editions of
legendary 'Recording Band'
widely known as Berklee's 'inner circle'
famous for the 'Jazz in The Classroom'
recordings of the 50's, 60's and 70's
and in which numerous Jazz greats
including Joe Zawinul, Quincy Jones,
Toshiko Akiyoshi, John Abercrombie,
Bill Frisell and
their respectve music careers started.
He has since served as an invited lecturer at
New World School For The Arts, University of
Florida/Miami-Dade College, Miami FL, and at
Berklee College of Music as well as participated
in ensemble clinics at Colegio Ward and Centro
Cultural San Martin, Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Former students have been accepted into music
and peforming arts
programs at Manhattan School
of Music, The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music,
New York City, The Special Music School High School at Kaufman Music Center NYC, Western Illinois University WIU, SUNY Purchase (State University of New York ), Berklee College of Music,
Bard College, New York City's Third Street Settlement and
Willie Mae Rock Camp For Girls. Sten Hostfalt's former
Royal College of Music, Stockholm ( Kungliga
Musikhogskolan) students (2001-05) are among
Europe's most active and successful musicians.
As a long-time educational fixture in Manhattans
Midtown and Downtown East Village,
City - Mr. Hostfalt's musical expertise have also
been sought out by students already enrolled at
prime New York City
institutions for higher education including Juilliard School Of Music, New York University,
Columbia University and Mannes School
of Music. His longtime commitment to coaching professional musicians, performing artists and music professionals have included on-offs or regular lessons with members of popular, world famous acts like The Strokes, Afghan Whigs, Okkervil River, Titus Andronicus, Psychic Twin, La Otracina and Barnum & Baileys Ringling Brothers Circus.

Queensborough Youth Conservatory, through
Queensbourough Community College's * office of
( 2010 ) Sten Hostfalt is
currently also, since the 2009 inception a teaching
faculty member of New York Jazz Academy-twice
represented in concert at Carnegie Hall's Isaac
Stern Auditorium and described by Down Beat
as one of New York's fastest growing
